History of Rokytnice nad Jizerou
Rokytnice nad Jizerou was named after the Huťský stream with its waters flowing amongst the majestic willows, in Czech a willow is called a ‘rokyta'. The area was also once known as Kalich (meaning Chalice) as it had become a sanctuary to many protestants.
Rokytnice nad Jizerou was founded in the year 1574 as miners of wood, copper and silver moved into the area. The main mine of the area was known as Vysoky Hrad (High Castle) on the Kotel Mountain. From this high point the Ore had to be carried all the way down to the town ship.
Over time there have been many attempts at a revival of the mines, however, they were always in vain with the mines becoming desolate and flooded.
The glass tradition of Rokytnice has always been very important and in 1562 the owner of the estate, Arnošt from Újezdec and Kunice, founded the Rokytnice glassworks. Here the famous glass family of Schürer worked for many years.
The area of Rokytnice was always predominately Protestant, at one point in the history of the town there was not a single catholic on the list of subjects in the area. In the late 1650's however, the missionary Kašpar Dirig from the Society of Jesus, came to Rokytnice and managed to win over several stubborn heretics. He did not have an easy time though with his home being raided many times.
Over the years Rokytnice has experienced many revolts and rebellions. Notably in the 1770's peasants rebelled armed with pitchforks, rifles and sabers attacking the manorial court and local vicarage. They were fought off and eventually the leaders were all caught and lived the rest of their lives in prison.
During the 18th Century weaving was a very big part of Rokytnice, with much of the population involved in the handiwork. At the beginning of the 19th Century however a textile production factory was built, meaning only one thing, another rebellion for the many local jobs lost. On December 1st, 1839, the mechanical spinning equipment of J. Grossmann was completely destroyed by the townsfolk.
Construction of a railway in 1899 spurred further development of the textile industry and in the same period a town hall was built in Art Nouveu style. The industry though slowly retreated with the growth in tourism after World War II.
